At first glance, you'd never really think that Taylor Momsen was capable of singing well, let alone leading a rock band. Taylor is the front woman of "The Pretty Reckless", and today marks the release of their debut studio album, "Light Me Up", in North America. Miss Momsen's vocals contributes a lot to the enjoyment of this album; not only is it raw, raspy, and rough...it sounds mature, and carries the album's 11 tracks to another level.
I've been so excited for this LP.. to finally have it in my hands, after listening to "Make Me Wanna Die" and the EP, released sometime last year. Lyrically, TPR's music is pretty raw, and the subject matter is quite edgy. Sex, drugs, and even death... What more could you possibly want/need? I try to ignore the fact that she is the girl from Gossip Girl, who wears skimpy outfits + scary amounts of eye make-up. It's about the music, and in my opinion, the music is worth the listen.
It just so happens that I have been listening to the album all day, on an endless loop, and can finally pick out my top three favourites:
- Just Tonight
Here I am, and I can't seem to see straight.. I'm too numb to feel right now. And here I am, watching the clock that's ticking away my time. I'm too numb to feel right now.
- Factory Girl
I'm waiting for my man on Hollywood and Vine (so fine). Getting done in L.A. sun, I'm on New York time. Take a look at those red lights, green lights, blowin' my mind. I'll show you something, if you show me a good time.
- Since You're Gone
Since you're high, since you steal, since you hate everything I feel. Since you cheat, since you lie, since you don't wanna try things I wanna try.
My closing comments would be that: I wish there were a couple more songs, two or three, maybe. Eleven is okay, but sometimes, you can never have enough. I also really like the album cover, and how the little girl is basically a mini version of Taylor :)
4.5/5
