It's always such an empowering feeling to experience such big changes happening around you, whether they directly concern you or not. To know that something prejudiced, something negative that was holding many people from happiness, has been turned into a major positive. Most people don't realize this, but the state of New York, has a gigantic place in my heart that cannot be filled by anything else. Although, I still have yet to step foot on to its busy sidewalks, that still does not change how I feel in the slightest. Mere hours, okay, a couple hours ago, it was announced that gay marriage would finally be legalized in the state of NY. The biggest state in the United States to approve such a law.
The Empire State building was specially lit up like a rainbow for the occasion, and this is the main discussion that I see all over my Twitter timeline, as well as my Tumblr dashboard. People are rejoicing, and for good reason. It's such a proud moment for me, one who hopes that she will become somewhat of a New Yorker in the near future. Equality is a powerful thing, and really should be something that is available to every single person on this planet. Everybody deserves to be treated fair and justly. Everyone deserves to have the same rights as their neighbour, whether that is having the ability to vote, or the ability to marry the person that they love. It really shouldn't matter whether or not that person is the same gender as you. Love is love.
This kind of a change could not have come at a better time. Our world is still plagued with other social issues, epidemics, war, etc., and I just would like to commend all the individuals that are responsible for this law being passed. I feel like history has went down tonight, and I want to remember this day for as long as possible.
June 24th, 2011 - The day that the world became a little more open minded and accepting.
